The Brief

O-week is one of the most important dates on the university calendar in Australia. There’s little more exciting than stepping onto campus for the first time as a tertiary student. 

After making it through the tender process, Inck was tasked with creating a functional and great-looking branded notebook/planner and other items for Griffith University to hand out to incoming students as part of a welcome pack. 

Working with a specific budget and a brief that included eco-conscious products and responsible production methods, we collaborated with the Griffith University team to create a bespoke selection of products that students will use and hang onto for many years as a keepsake of their time at university.

The Process

When you come to Inck with the words ‘unique’ and ‘bespoke’, as a promotional product supplier we really do start from scratch and work to create a one of a kind product that can’t be found in retail stores. 

Working with Griffiths University’s designer and other key decision-makers, we ensured our creation would align with the brand and expected product quality. The collection also had to appeal to the majority of the university’s demographic: young students who are notoriously hard to please. 

Designing the look and feel is often the easy part, although it was important to us to create the right design, to align with Griffith University’s 50+ year history. 

The following steps were an important part of the process: 

Choosing materials: Finding eco-friendly materials for branded products that could be mass-produced while meeting quality standards was a significant challenge. We navigated this by working closely with suppliers and requesting physical samples so the university team could see first-hand what they were about to order.

Logistics: Coordinating shipping and delivery, especially considering the unique requirement of delivering a 40-foot container to the university, presented logistical hurdles. The other problem was that delivery had to take place across Christmas in Australia and Chinese New Year, when many people are on leave.

Meticulous planning and coordination enabled smooth execution and meant that a single container arrived on time and didn’t add to the overall cost by sitting at a shipping dock for days or weeks.

Budget constraints: Balancing sustainability with affordability was challenging because we had to source materials that fit the bill in terms of cost as well as quality. 

Taking time during the discovery, design, and development phases was essential to the success of this project. The Inck team made efforts to understand timelines as well as product requirements so everything could progress like clockwork.
